We Need Your Help!

M45, The Seven Sisters - Taken by Matt RussellRecent changes in US Forest Service policies and new growth timber have reduced the original four RMSS sites to two and probably one depending on the results of impact studies by the USFS. Restrictions on creating new roads prevent access to some areas that might be suitable as do the cost of site surveys that must be born by the requesting user with no guarantee that the site would be approved. CSAS has therefore formed a Grants and Land Acquisition Committee (G&LAC) to raise funds for the purchase of property for RMSS and smaller local star parties in support of CSAS outreach programs.

The first priority of the G&LAC will be to insure that CSAS will always have a place to conduct RMSS when the use of currently available sites becomes too restrictive or impossible. The location and acquisition of a suitable RMSS site will take into consideration the following factors:

  1. RMSS has been traditionally held in High Mountain Meadows of approximately 20 Acres that can accommodate an estimated 450 to 500 people without crowding.
  2. There must be 360 degree views and dark skies with minimum visibility of the Denver, Colorado Springs, Pueblo, and local light domes.
  3. Proximity to Colorado Springs should be an easy 2 to 2.5 hour drive or less.
  4. Access to the site should not require four wheel drive vehicles.
  5. The site must include sufficient additional land to permit the eventual installation of septic system and support structures to eliminate the need for registration and activity tents and provide amenities such as showers and toilets.

The current character of RMSS is and has been an important factor in its’ success. The relatively laid back atmosphere, family oriented campground style, uncrowded venue is a trade mark of RMSS that must be maintained.

While it would be desirable to have the site donated this cannot be counted on and the G&LAC has begun to do fund raising within CSAS, the local community, and the public in general. To insure the uninterrupted continuation of RMSS we ask for your support.

Donations in any amount to CSAS Building Fund will be most gratefully accepted. There is a section on the RMSS Registration Form for any help you can give.
